The
village of Ymir lies in the mountains between Salmo and Nelson.
It sits alongside the Salmo River, a short 30 second jaunt off
Highway 6. At the turn of the century, Ymir was a bustling mining
town, and you can still see some of the old mine workings on
the hillsides. Today the village and surrounding rural area
is home to approximately 350 people. Although a fire swept through
the village during the mining times, two of the original hotels
as well as the church are still standing and have been recently
renovated to reflect their former glory. Ymir is an outdoor
recreation paradise. The old rail bed that runs right through
town is now a popular walking and biking trail. Mountain bike,
hiking and horseback rid-ing trails wind through the forested
hillsides. Paragliders enjoy the air currents, taking off from
a local launch pad. Kayakers run the river rapids, and swimmers
enjoy a cool dip in one of the swimming holes.
Ymir has ample camping and picnicking spots on the main street
right beside the river, or spend the night in the historic Hotel
Ymir or the Ymir Palace Inn, both established in 1896 and now
restored to their former glory. Laid back Ymir is very kid and
dog friendly. Lounge on the deck of the Wild & Wooly Ymir
store with the locals, or stop by Endless Harvest Market Warehouse
to stock up on organic BC fruit, produce and local goods. Stop
by Ymir on your summer trip and enjoy some friendly and relaxing
hospitality!
