Vancouver is proud to be the Host City of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

The famous ski resort, Whistler, will share the events with Vancouver. It will be the first winter games held in a large metropolis city as most of the previous games have taken place in smaller resort towns.
Whistler resort is situated in British Columbia’s coast mountain range, 75 miles from Vancouver. Whistler and Blackcomb offer over 8,000 acres of terrain with more than 200 marked trails. Thirty-three lifts carry skiers and snowboarders to 12 alpine bowls and three glaciers. Runs are designated 20% for beginners, 55% for intermediates, and 25% for experts. The longest trail runs 11 kilometers and the vertical drop on each mountain is over 1,500 meters. Whistler BC, world renowned as the venue for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and as one of the top ski and all-season resorts in North America.For Whistler, the events will be alpine skiing, biathlon, cross country skiing, Nordic combined, ski jumping, bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton, as well as all the Paralympic events. |

The Winter Olympics History The move toward a winter version of the Olympics began in 1908 when figure skating made an appearance at the Summer Games in London. Organizers of the 1916 Summer Games in Berlin planned to introduce a “Skiing Olympia,” featuring nordic events in the Black Forest, but the Games were cancelled after the outbreak of World War I in 1914. The Games resumed in 1920 at Antwerp, Belgium, where figure skating returned and ice hockey was added as a medal event. Despite the objections of Modern Olympics' founder Baron Pierre de Coubertin and the resistance of the Scandinavian countries, which had staged their own Nordic championships every four or five years from 1901-26 in Sweden, the International Olympic Committee sanctioned an “International Winter Sports Week” at Chamonix, France, in 1924. The 11-day event, which included nordic skiing, speed skating, figure skating, ice hockey and bobsledding, was a huge success and was called the first Olympic Winter Games. Seventy years after those first cold weather Games, the 17th edition of the Winter Olympics took place in Lillehammer, Norway, in 1994. The event ended the four-year Olympic cycle of staging both Winter and Summer Games in the same year and began a new schedule that calls for the two Games to alternate every two years.
